אזְרבייג'ן הפכה בעשורים האחרונים ליעד תיירותי מרתק, נגיש ובטוח, שמושך אליו מבקרים רבים מרחבי העולם. מאז תחילת שנות ה-2000 זינק מספר התיירים הזרים פי שלושה. הבירה באקו היא עיר מודרנית, קוסמופוליטית ומאובטחת היטב, שבה התיירים חשים ביטחון – הודות להשקעה ממשלתית נרחבת בביטחון הציבור ובשמירת הסדר, כאשר בטיחות הציבור ניצבת בעדיפות גבוהה בסדר היום הממשלתי.

אחד ממאפייניה הבולטים של אזרבייג'ן הוא אופייה החילוני והמרקם החכרתי הסובלני והפתוח שלה. אף שהאסלאם הוא הדת הרווחת, הזהות הדתית במדינה נתפסת בעיקר כמאפיין תרבותי-אתני ולא כפרקטיקה דתית מחייבת. החיים הציבוריים מתנהלים באווירה של פתיחות, כבוד הדדי וסובלנות.

הקהילה היהודית באזרבייג'ן היא מן הוותיקות בעולם. שורשיה נטועים עוד בימי גלות בבל ובתקופת האימפריה הפרסית. הקבוצה העתיקה והמרכזית ביותר היא "יהודי ההרים" – קהילה ייחודית שהתפתחה בהרי הקווקז ושמרה על זהותה לאורך דורות. החל מהמאה ה־19 התיישבו בבאקו גם יהודים אשכנזים, ובהמשך גם יהודים מגאורגיה. כיום מונה הקהילה היהודית באזרבייג'ן כ-16 עד 22 אלף נפש, והמרכזים הקהילתיים העיקריים הם בבאקו ובקירמיזי קסבה – "העיירה האדומה" שבסמוך לעיר קובה – היישוב היהודי היחיד כמעט בעולם מחוץ לישראל בו הרוב המוחלט הוא על טהרת היישוב היהודי.

באזרבייג'ן מתקיימים חיים יהודיים פעילים. בבאקו פועלים מספר בתי כנסת, מוסדות חינוך יהודיים, תנועות נוער, עמותות תרבות וארגוני נשים. בתי הכנסת ובתי העלמין ההיסטוריים מתוחזקים בקפידה, והקהילה נהנית מביטחון, השתלבות מכובדת במרקם החיים המקומי ומעמד איתן ויציב.

אזרבייג'ן מקיימת קשרים דיפלומטיים, ביטחוניים, כלכליים ותרבותיים הדוקים עם מדינת ישראל. היחסים האסטרטגיים בין המדינות כוללים שיתופי פעולה בתחומי האנרגיה, המסחר וההגנה – מה שהופך את אזרבייג'ן ליעד מזמין ומסביר פנים במיוחד עבור מבקרים יהודים וישראלים, ולמקום עשיר ומשמעותי להיכרות עם סיפורה של קהילה יהודית עתיקת יומין המתקיימת ברוח של פתיחות, סובלנות וכבוד הדדי.

Azerbaijan has rapidly emerged as a vibrant, fascinating and safe destination for international visitors, with foreign tourist arrivals increasing more than threefold since the early 2000s. Baku, the capital, is a modern, cosmopolitan and well-policed city where tourists can feel at ease, with public safety clearly prioritised by the government.

The country is widely recognised for its secular, tolerant and inclusive nature, even as Islam remains the dominant religion. Public life in Azerbaijan is characterised by an atmosphere of openness, tolerance and mutual respect.

The Jewish presence in the region dates back to the Babylonian exile and the Persian Empire. The largest and oldest group is the Mountain Jews—an ancient community indigenous to the Caucasus Mountains. From the early 19th century, Ashkenazi Jews began settling in Baku, followed by Georgian Jews. Today, Azerbaijan is home to a longstanding and diverse Jewish population, estimated at 16,000–22,000 people, with the largest communities in Baku and in Qırmızı Qəsəbə (“Red Town”) near Quba—considered the only all-Jewish town outside of Israel.

Jewish life in Azerbaijan is visible and vibrant. Baku alone has several synagogues, and the community supports Jewish schools, youth groups, cultural associations and women’s organisations. Historic synagogues and cemeteries are preserved with care, and the Jewish community is widely regarded as one of the most integrated, secure and respected in the diaspora.

Azerbaijan maintains strong diplomatic, economic and cultural ties with the State of Israel. This strategic relationship includes cooperation in defence, energy and trade, alongside cultural and educational exchanges—making Azerbaijan a particularly welcoming and hospitable destination for Jewish and Israeli visitors and a meaningful place to explore Jewish heritage in a spirit of openness and mutual respect.
